Getting to Kyrgyzstan takes some planning. It's not a destination served by low-cost carriers or direct connections from most European cities. But it's more straightforward than people assume — once you know the routes.
Here's everything you need to know to get from your front door to Bishkek's Manas International Airport.
Visas
For most nationalities, Kyrgyzstan has made entry significantly easier in recent years.
Visa-free countries (60–90 days): Citizens of Turkey, EU member states, the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and many others can enter Kyrgyzstan without a visa for stays up to 30–90 days depending on nationality.
Turkish citizens: Visa-free, up to 90 days. No application needed — just your passport.
Other nationalities: Check the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs list or apply for an e-Visa online at evisa.e-gov.kg. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days and costs around $35–70.
Tip: Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. Some entry officers enforce this strictly.
Getting There from Istanbul
Istanbul is the most convenient hub for Kyrgyzstan from Europe, the Middle East, and Turkey.
Turkish Airlines flies direct from Istanbul (IST) to Bishkek (FRU) — the only direct European hub connection. Flight time is approximately 5.5 hours. Frequency varies by season; check the current schedule as summer flights are more frequent.
Pegasus Airlines and other Turkish carriers sometimes offer competitive connections via Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), though usually with a stop.
Book early for summer: May–August is peak season. Prices increase significantly after January for summer departures.
Getting There from the UK and Western Europe
There are no direct flights from London, Paris, or Frankfurt to Bishkek. Your options:
- Via Istanbul (IST): Turkish Airlines is the most reliable option — one connection, good frequency.
- Via Moscow (SVO): Aeroflot and S7 Airlines offer connections, but check current political/logistical conditions before booking.
- Via Dubai (DXB): Emirates to Bishkek, with a layover in Dubai. Longer journey but reliable and often competitively priced from UK airports.
- Via Almaty (ALA): Fly to Kazakhstan's main hub and connect via Air Astana to Bishkek — roughly 3 hours between cities by air (or 4–5 by bus if you have time).
Expected journey time from London: 10–14 hours total, depending on layover.
Manas International Airport (FRU)
Bishkek's airport is small, manageable, and easy to navigate. Arrivals are straightforward — immigration queue, baggage claim, exit. The process is faster than most European airports.
Currency: There is a small exchange desk in arrivals. Rates are slightly worse than in the city. If you need cash immediately, change a small amount here and get the rest in town.
SIM card: Available in the arrivals hall and in the city. Local SIMs (Beeline or MegaCom) are cheap and work well in Bishkek and larger towns. Coverage in highland areas is limited to none.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Taxi: The most convenient option. Fixed-price taxis are available from the official stand in arrivals — agree on a price before getting in (usually 500–800 som from the airport to central Bishkek). Ride-sharing apps (InDriver is widely used) are often cheaper.
Shared minibus: Much cheaper but slower and less straightforward for first-time visitors with luggage.
The journey into central Bishkek takes 20–40 minutes depending on traffic.
Our Tour Meetup Point
All Atla Yolculuk tours begin in Bishkek. We meet participants at 10:00 am on Day 1, at a central location confirmed in your booking details. From there, we handle all transfers to the tour region — a drive of approximately 7 hours to the Naryn highlands.
We recommend arriving in Bishkek the day before your tour start date. This gives you time to rest, pick up any last-minute supplies, and acclimatise slightly before the main transfer.
A Night in Bishkek
Bishkek is a pleasant Soviet-era city that has modernised significantly in the past decade. There's a good selection of guesthouses and hotels at all price points. A few things worth knowing:
- The Osh Bazaar is worth a visit the morning before departure — it's one of the best markets in Central Asia and a good place to buy local food and supplies
- The Chuy Prospekt area is the central boulevard with most restaurants and cafés
- Bishkek is generally safe and easy to navigate on foot in the central areas
Recommended budget: Allow $30–80/night for accommodation depending on your standard. Food is inexpensive — a full meal in a local café runs under $5.
