Kyrgyzstan's highland landscape is breathtaking year-round — but for horseback riding, timing is everything. The narrow window between May and August transforms the Naryn region into one of the most spectacular riding destinations on earth.

Why the Season Matters

The Naryn highlands sit at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,800 metres. Outside the summer months, mountain passes are snowbound and river crossings become dangerous. The nomadic families who have grazed these pastures for centuries follow a strict seasonal rhythm — and so do we.

Month by Month

May — The highlands come alive. Snow is still visible on the peaks, wildflowers carpet the valleys, and the air is crisp and clear. Ideal for photography and riding at a relaxed pace. Groups are smaller in May.

June — Peak season begins. Temperatures are warm during the day (15–22°C), cool at night. The rivers are full from snowmelt. Perfect conditions for the full 7-day expedition.

July — The hottest month, but at altitude it remains comfortable. Nomadic families are fully established on the summer pastures (jailoos), offering authentic encounters along the route.

August — The light turns golden, the grasses dry to amber. A photographer's dream. Slightly fewer tourists than July. The last month before the mountain families begin their descent.

What to Expect on the Trail

Riding through the Naryn highlands, you'll cross wide open steppes, ford shallow rivers, and camp beside lakes that reflect the sky. The horses are native Kyrgyz breeds — sturdy, sure-footed, and adapted to altitude.

Each day covers 20–35 km depending on the route. No prior riding experience is required, though some comfort in the saddle makes the experience more enjoyable.

Our Recommendation

For first-time visitors, late June or early July offers the best balance of weather, scenery, and cultural encounters. For experienced riders who prefer quieter trails, May is exceptional.
